What do these two comics have in common?

What recurring theme do we see on these two comic book covers?

BRIDE'S SECRETS #7, (April 1955, Ajax):

and POPULAR TEENAGERS (SECRETS OF LOVE) #22 (July 1954, Star Publications):

Apparently both these guys are dating gals with broken necks... is that neck position even possible? That must be some SERIOUS muscle relaxant those girls are on...

OK, I've been studying these for a bit... look at that first one... What the heck is going on? They're at a circus, he's blindfolded and her neck's broken! Human cannonball/knife-thrower romance gone wrong? Or am I reading too much into this?

And that second cover just looks silly... it looks like that guy is making the "motorboat" sound on her neck... "MMmbrbrbrbrbrmmmm... baybuh, I luv ya... mmmbrbrbrbrbrbrlbrlbrlbrl..."
Heh heh heh heh...

Oh my, where to begin with this one? Let's see... one could perhaps claim that this is how the term "necking" became popular... one could also point out the possible vampire theme going on...and the muscle-relaxant theory is a good one too! Oh, and I can't neglect to make the obligatory "blind date" joke about the first cover! (So when they dance, I guess it's the blind leading the blind?)

I guess neck-kissing was just a lot more popular back in those days. A real gentleman wouldn't want to mess up a girl's makeup now, would he?

I really like that first cover. There are so many things going on, aside from the broken necked gal.

They are necking at the circus, of all places, right under the net. Why?

Look how tiny the knot in the guy's necktie is... it looks like it's child-size or something. Either that, or the guy's head is a giant freak head... look how big it is compared to hers! Maybe he's Conan O'Brien.

The clown over the guy's left shoulder is staring at them, full of despair because he'll never know that kind of love. Plus, he's balancing a rabbit in his hand.

My favorite part, though, is that the trapeze artist at the top is moments away from knocking the gal with the umbrella off her tightrope.

That's no rabbit, that's my clownly armadillo!
