"I'm like a bad penny, I always turn up."

How great is it that after 18 years since the release of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, this Memorial Day will finally see the release of Indiana Jones 4?!? Well, if you're a fan of Doctor Jones, then Dark Horse Comics has a little something coming out this winter that may take the edge off that Indy fix you need while you wait for the new film.

Drum roll please...

Dark Horse Presents...

Indiana Jones Omnibus Volume 1

Artist:
Dan Barry, Leo Duranona, Karl Kesel, Andy Mushynsky, and more

Seen at York Chalkwalk 2007

Our old pal and "outsider" artist Curt Pottiger at work on his offering at the annual York Chalkwalk:

The finished piece:

Art is all around you, sometimes at your feet.
Art is found in many media, some transitory like chalk on a sidewalk.
Look for art everywhere. Catch it before it's gone.

A near-unanimous Pick of the Month?

Is it possible? Could ALL the Comix Connection Counter Monkeys be in unanimous agreement just this once? Behold the object of contention, quite possibly the most overlooked and underrated book of the year:

Originally appearing as an eight-part backup in DC's TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED, DOCTOR THIRTEEN: ARCHITECTURE AND MORALITY is writer Brian Azarello at his best... a delightful romp with forgotten DC characters battling The Architects (the four real-life writers of DCs universe-changing series 52), filtered through the sensibilities of the no-nonsense paranormal debunker, Doctor Thirteen. All delineated by the spectacular art of Cliff Chiang.

HERE'S a much better review/summary than I could hope to pen. Check it out, all in a snug trade paperback for a mere $14.99 and available now.

Ten Comix Connection Counter Monkeys agree: DOCTOR THIRTEEN: ARCHITECTURE AND MORTALITY is awesome!

(Did I mention the Nazi Gorillas? The VAMPIRE Nazi Gorillas? You can never get enough Vampire Nazi Gorillas.)

Guess who's the featured retailer at Rude Dude Productions?

That's right, Comix Connection is the featured retailer this month at Steve Rude's website. (Click HERE to view.) Steve Rude is of course the creator of the comic book NEXUS, along with writer Mike Baron. Nexus is back and it's like he never left the racks.

And all of you are reading NEXUS, right? Well, here's a handy-dandy summary from the Rude Dude Production's website:

The year is 2841. On the distant moon of Ylum, an enigmatic man is plagued by nightmares. He is forced to dream of the past. He dreams of real-life butchers and tyrants, and what they have done.

And then he finds them, and kills
them.

Thanks for the honor, Steve!

The Downfall of Pompeii

is a cool new family board game from Mayfair Games. It's subtitle "Can You Escape The Inferno?" pretty much sums up this fast-paced and exciting game. Ned, Jared, Joe and I all got to play Downfall at the recent Diamond Retailer Summit in Baltimore a couple of weeks ago... we like it so much, we ended up playing it three times, until the Mayfair demo guy booted us out of the room.

Anyway the game goes something like this:

It's 79 A.D. and each player is trying to save his family members/villagers from the approaching lava from the erupting volcano Vesuvius.

The game has two main phases. During the first phase, you place colorful wooden playing pieces representing people onto the board by playing one of the four cards in your hand. Each card shows a number that corresponds to buildings on the gameboard. Some building are big, some are small, some are close to the exit gates of Pompeii and some are far away. Strategy involves deciding which buildings to place your hapless family members, depending on cards drawn and the situation on the board. If you place a villager into a buliding that is already occupied, you can place extra game pieces equal to the number there. The more victims -er- people you place on the board in the first phase, the more chances you have of getting people OUT in the second phase. A nice twist is that sometimes "OMEN" cards come up on the draw, which allows you to sacrifice an opposing player's piece into the cool plastic volcano located on one corner of the board. Making tiny screaming sounds while doing so is immensely gratifying.

When the second volcano card is drawn, the second phase of the game begins. No more placing family members on the board... it's time now to GET OUT OF DODGE, or rather Pompeii! Each player now attempts to move pieces towards the city gates to exit and count as victory points, while at the same time each player first lays a LAVA tile (sometimes right on top of your opponents pieces) turning them a delicious golden brown, worth no points. Into the volcano with them!

Excitement mounts as more and more lava tiles cover the city, closing off exits and funneling panic-stricken wooden pieces towards the exits! Winner is the player who gets the most people out of Pompeii!

Game-play is easy and fun... I played this with my kids Max (8 years old) and Leni (4 years old, with a bit of help) and we all had fun. Each game plays differently, so each game is fresh. Game time is 20-30 minutes and the best part? The high-quality components, including the awesome volcano to throw people in to!

Naturally, this is available at both Comix Connection locations.

OK, Josh Middlteton is just plain amazing

I was rooting through my bookmarks the other day when I realized I hadn't popped in over at Josh Middleton's place in a while. Well, I forgot just how astonishingly good his work is. Go poke around over there and see all the magnificent works in progress... simply amazing. And if you have time, watch this:

That is too too cool. Probably due to the fact that I am in no way artistically talented, I love watching the creative process involved with comic art. It's a constant source of amazement for me to see ideas come out of a mind and become fully formed on paper. I love it. Keep it up Josh! (More Middleton goodness HERE.)

George Becker's other vehicle

Regular comic reader and all-around great guy George Becker swung by to pick up his comics the other day driving this monster from his other job:

SPC George Becker and Becker's Wrecker

The vehicle is a HEMTT, a Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck.

Here it is in the parking lot at the Mechanicsburg store.

Those tires with wheels weigh 600 pounds a piece!

Trying to look cool, failing miserably.

A huge mistake: disaster looms as I ease off the brake and give it some gas...

Anyway, thanks for bringing her by the store, George... that sure made my day. When can I borrow it?

Jared has the coolest sneakers

Jared, the manager of our York store has the most amazing Converse Chuck Taylor High-Top sneakers. He has "reverse chucks", in that the colors are reversed from a normal pair of black Chuck Taylor All-Stars high tops, so they are white overall with a black sole. Why am I telling you all this? Well, check this out... while we were at the Diamond Retailer Summit in Baltimore last Monday and Tuesday, Jared had a brilliant idea.

Behold:

A sketch of Professor X by superstar artist John Cassaday!

A sketch of Frank the Duck by Frank Cho!

A sketch of Katchoo(?) by STRANGERS IN PARADISE's Terry Moore!

Diamond Retailer Summit Report #2

Wow. What a whirlwind of great stuff and cool people. What can I say? The last two days were spent hobnobbing with industry professionals, suppliers, distributors and creators, all with the goal of improving our business and also the comic book industry as a whole. Did we succeed? We'll see, I guess.

Anyway, much fun was had by me, Ned, Jared and Joe... and here's what we learned:

DARK HORSE COMICS:
  • A SERENITY comic series is coming
  • There will be HELLBOY hardcover "archives" and a HELLBOY Free Comic Book Day book in 2008
  • Following the current 40-issue BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER run, there will be a BUFFY "Season Nine" series
MARVEL COMICS:
  • For Free Comic Book Day 2008, there will be all-new MARVEL ADVENTURES IRON MAN and X-MEN comics to give out
  • We got a sneak peeks at the "October Zombie Month" covers that will be coming out soon for IRON FIST, SHE-HULK, MS MARVEL, HOWARD THE DUCK, SPIDER-GIRL, PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL and more
  • We saw a bit of the SPIDER-MAN "One More Day" storyline stuff, that contains a major revelation in the third part (first part is in the stores right now, by the way)
  • The big upcoming X-Men hoo-hah is called X-MEN DISASSEMBLED, which almost made Jared pass out from excitement
  • There will be a big juicy Bendis/Malev DAREDEVIL Omnibus in the future
  • There will be no more X-MEN
  • There will be a new DARK TOWER series called DARK TOWER: THE LONG ROAD HOME (with a possible Midnight Release Party!)
  • THERE ARE SKRULLS EVERYWHERE! SERIOUSLY! RUN! IT'S A SECRET INVASION! (Coming in April 2008 by Bendis and Yu)
  • The INCREDIBLE HULK turns red (maybe because he's SUPER DUPER MAD?)
  • The new IRON MAN trailer looked incredibly cool
DC COMICS:
  • FINAL CRISIS looms on the horizon
  • There will be a new LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES, written by Jim Shooter!
  • KILLING JOKE by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland will be getting the deluxe hardcover treatment with lots of extras for $14.95 (if I recall correctly)
  • The SUPER FRIENDS return in a new series, plus the TINY TITANS debuts
  • Mike Kunkle will be doing a new Billy Batson/SHAZAM book
  • BAT LASH, a cherished DC Western character returns, written by Sergio Aragones and drawn by John Severin... oh and Sergio will be writing THE SPIRIT too
  • Brian Wood will write NORTHLANDERS, a story of the Vikings
  • ABSOLUTE SANDMAN Volume 3 will arrive in the Spring of 2008
  • There will be a WORLD OF WARCRAFT comic book, to which Ned says "WOW." (Get it?)
There was a lot more from many different publishers, which I will be covering here shortly. Plus I will be posting pictures of Jared's Reverse Chuck Taylors (for a very good reason.)

All of us came back pumped up and excited by what the publishers have in store... these Diamond Summits are very rejuvenating.

Stay tuned.

Joust? JOUST?

--Guest rant by Brian Linnen

I went to this website called GameDaily BIZ and I learned that Hollywood is preparing to make a movie based on Joust. JOUST!!

If you aren't old like me, you may not realize how dumb that is. Joust is a video game that we used to like back in the 1980s. It came along after Pac-Man but before Double Dragon II. Let me show you what Joust looked like:

That's all there is to it. How do you make a movie out of that??

On another site, Newsarama, I learned that in order to "launch the new Joust franchise" even before the movie's release, they are making a Joust comic book.

Has the world gone mad??

In Joust, you are a warrior who... well... JOUSTS.. .on the back of some sort of oversized winged bird against other warriors who are also riding oversized winged birds. When you defeat an opponent in combat, their bird lays an egg and flies away. You have to fly over that egg then to crush it before it hatches into another oversized bird that will try to fight you. Meanwhile, you have to watch out for the fiery hand that reaches up out of the lava at the bottom of the screen because if it catches you, it pulls you into a horrible death in the molten rock.

Oh, and every now and again a pterodactyl flies across the screen and you just have to avoid him because there is no way to kill him.

What a movie that all is going to make!!!

And do you know what the REALLY sad thing is? I'll probably be there opening day!!

(Thanks, Brian! That was very enjoyable!)
