Comix Creators' Congratulations
Bill & Ned are pretty good guys, and part of the fun in thinking about this anniversary was to do something for them. This past fall Jared (York Store Manager), Tony and I attended the Small Press Expo in Bethesda MD, and we all the good fortune of meeting and talking with many comic creators that were there for the show. While we were there meeting people, I had a bristol pad on hand and thought to ask Matt Wagner for a sketch. Not for me, but for the store, and more specifically The Anniversary of the Store. Mr. Wagner kindly proceeded in turning out a piece for us, and soon thereafter all of us divided up with a part of that bristol pad and a mission to get as many more sketches and well wishes out of the assembled creators as we could! When it was all said and done, we ended up with quite a few pieces. So I'll begin sharing these with you now. Here's the first three for today, but I'll post more this weekend. Enjoy!
First up... Matt Wagner, writer, artist, and creator of Grendel and the Mage series. Wagner's also made many contributions to DC Comics on various Batman books, The Trinity mini-series, and his incredible approach to pulp fiction on Sandman Mystery Theatre. Now he's turned his sights to Zorro for the upcoming series he's overseeing for Dynamite.
Next up... Jeffrey Brown, creator of so many original works that are published through Top Shelf Productions, like "Clumsy", "Every Girl Is the End of the World for Me", "Feeble Attempts", and so many more. He also directed Death Cab for Cutie's video for "Your Heart is an Empty Room".
And finally for this installment... artist Becky Cloonan, who many of you know from her collaborations with writer Brian Wood, on books like Channel Zero and Demo. She's also recently been working on American Virgin, and the sequel to her Tokyo Pop book, East Coast Rising, is due out in the first half of this year. She likes Sub-Mariner quite a bit... so who knows, maybe Marvel should pay her some mind!
