A York, Pennsylvania Christmas tradition

If you live in or near York, Pennsylvania, you've certainly heard the haunting sounds of the New York Wire Company's steam whistle playing traditional Christmas favorites:

It's a very spooky sound that fills up the valley and reverberates against the hills surrounding York. Did you hear it last night?

Merry Christmas, everyone!

I have never heard this and would love to. Do they play it the same time every year? On a side note, I loved the look of the old news reports.

Yeah, josh... they start playing at midnight on Christmas Eve... people park for blocks around to hear it. It's right on East Market Street near the train tracks. The sounds they get out of that thing are very spooky.

And, yes those old newscasts seem very quaint don't they?

yeah, they do. Kim Lemon and Ron Martin are so young in those clips. Thanks for the info.

I can hear it from my house. (Does that make me an expert on steam whistles?)

I have always been tempted to record it; I'm glad someone put it up on YouTube, because that's really cool.

Very cool Bill, thanks for posting that. I don't get to hear it since I'm on the other side of the counrty now. :(
I think my mom has a record of the whistle... my grandmother used to work at the New York Wire company.

Hey Timmy! That's cool that your grandmother worked there and that your mom has a record of the whistle... I read somewhere that that exists. Now I have something else to look for at junk stores!
