Manager Jared's Weekly Matchup Poll Semi-Finals #3

This is 3rd battle in the very serious Semi-Final Battles! Have you been voting?
If you have then you probably noticed how close the battles have been, as we've narrowed the players to only the best. Green Lantern has traveled the universe over and has seen things that other heroes can only dream of. Will his powers and experience be enough to best Dr. Doom, who has traversed the mystical realm and gained insight to magical powers unknown to man? Let's find out!

VOTE!

Green Lantern's Abilities: The power ring's most distinctive effect is the generation of green, solid-light constructs, the precise physical nature of which has never been specified. The size, complexity, and strength of these constructs is limited only by the ring-bearer's willpower; whatever the wearer imagines, the ring will create.

Dr. Doom's Abilities: Genius-level intellect, powered armor, skilled scientist and sorcerer, mind transferral.

Manager Jared's Weekly Matchup Poll Semi-Finals #2

THE END IS NIGH!

In our first Semi-Final battle Batman has come out to an early lead and it's not looking good for the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. There is still time to vote for the characters you love, as the battles last a month. A month is a long time for an arena style fight you say? Well this is the world of fiction; in fact, it's a sub-realm of fiction, where you the fan decides who would win. So I need your help again to determine who would better who in battle.

Two heavy hitters enter the arena. Who will leave standing?

Thor's abilities: Superhuman strength, speed, durability and longevity (via the golden apples of Idunn) Abilities via Mjolnir:

* Flight
* Energy absorption & projection
* Weather manipulation
* Dimensional transportation
* Electric manipulation

Martian Manhunter's abilities: Superhuman strength, speed, durability, longevity, stamina, invisibility, intangibility, senses, intelligence, regeneration, flight.

*Telepathy
*Molecular manipulation
*Martian vision.

Both are aliens to Earth but in different ways. One is a god and one is a Martian.

VOTE!

Found on Metafilter

Metafilter is one of my favorite places to visit on the internet. What is Metafilter? Why, it's a member-created "Community Weblog" of The Best Of The Web! For a one-time fee of $5.00, you can become a member and post your internet finds to the front page where all the other members can read and comment. The topics are limitless and the amount of entertainment and wonder I've gleaned from Metafilter dwarf that which I've gotten from all other sites on the Internet combined. Don't want to spend five bucks? Well, you can still go there and read. Read posts like THIS ONE on How To Measure The Speed Of Light With Your Microwave. Metafilter rocks.

Brian Keene invades DC COMICS!

Our old pal novelist Brian Keene (the man who put Bill Wahl into the Marvel Universe in DEAD OF NIGHT: DEVIL SLAYER, and made Ned Senft a Leader of Lepers in THE LAST ZOMBIE) invades DC Comics, with two items coming to the shelves this month.

First up, Brian will have a story in DCU Halloween Special 2010 featuring Superman and The Demon!

Then Brian pens DOOM PATROL #16 (which sadly will NOT feature Manager Jared Wolf as previously reported) with art by Keith Giffen! Read all about both HERE on Brian Keene's website!

Let your Friendly Neighborhood Comix Connection Counter Monkey know you want copies of these senses-shattering stunners in the Brian Keene tradition! Maybe if you ask him nice-like he'll sign them.

An amazing book

If you're a fan of STAR WARS, you should really check out the new coffee-table book The Making of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back... it's loaded with incredible behind-the-scenes photos of the filming of EMPIRE, like this:

And this:

CHECK OUT THOSE MATTRESSES! TOO COOL!

Read all about it HERE!

Just plain amazing. Whenever I marvel at the longevity of STAR WARS and remember how being a fan in 1978 often brought ridicule upon my head, I just smile and think: THE GEEKS WON! Star Wars is deeply entrenched in our popular culture and that couldn't make me happier!

BONUS: An interview with Boba Fett himself, Jeremy Bulloch, who once visited Comix Connection along with David Prowse!

The saddest news ever

Well, maybe not, but still sad. As you may have read, Manager Jared was scheduled to make an appearance in the Brian Keene-penned DOOM PATROL #16. Unfortunately, this is not to be. I'll let Brian tell it:
Although the creative team was excited about Jared's gruesome cameo, and although his severed head was originally drawn as Evil-Robotman's hood ornament, higher powers ultimately balked at using his likeness. So look for Jared to die in an upcoming issue of The Last Zombie instead!

Don't let this stop you from checking DOOM PATROL #16 out... it's still chock full of BRIAN KEENE GOODNESS!

October Winner!

I recently got this in my IN-BOX:
While I was stalking Stephen King in Bangor last week I made sure to have on my Comix Connection shirt, just in case he needed to know somewhere cool to buy comics, or if he called the cops and I got on the news or something. Anyway, I thought it was at least seasonally appropriate.

Manager Jared's Weekly Matchup Poll Semi-Finals #2

THE END IS NIGH!

So with each week we come nearer to the end. We have big names entering into the semi-finals, but only a few will leave. We have names like Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, Thor and more! And it's all because you voted it that way. So keep on voting as the temperature rises and a few heroes fall!

This is a huge bout as it will surely eliminate one of two absolute favorites.

SPIDER-MAN VS. BATMAN! There are walls to crawl and plenty of room for batarangs to fly.

Batman's Abilities: High human strength and peak conditions. Genius-Level Intellect. Skilled hand-to-hand combatant.

Spider-Man's Abilities: Superhuman strength, speed, stamina, agility, reflexes, and durability. Accelerated healing factor. Ability to cling to most surfaces. Able to shoot extremely strong and durable spider-web strings from wrists. Precognitive spider sense. Genius-Level Intellect.

A new potentially habitable planet has been discovered... shall we call it Earth 2?

Looks like we may have new neighbors:
After years of saying habitable exoplanets are just around the corner, planet hunters have finally found one. Gliese 581g is the first planet found to lie squarely in its star’s habitable zone, where the conditions are right for liquid water.

Read more HERE.

There's gotta be a better name for it than "Gliese 581g" though... any suggestions?

Hey cabana boy, the ice in my Mai-Tai has melted again!

It's really simple science, folks:

LAS VEGAS (Sept. 28) -- Las Vegas resorts have long vied to be known as the hottest place in town. But that's not such a great distinction for Vdara, a 10-month-old Strip hotel-condo where a "death ray" of strong Nevada sunlight reflects off the concave, all-glass facade and onto sections of the pool deck throughout the day.

Read the entire story HERE!

It's not very portable for a Death Ray, but still.
