What do you recommend?
Hey, my nephew, SPC Andrew Artz is currently with 2nd Platoon, 511th Sapper Company, 326th Engineer Battalion, out of Fort Cambell, KY and is currently deployed to Baghad in support of Operation New Dawn, under the 1st Infantry, and 25th Infantry Division, and him and the guys in his platoon NEED COMIC BOOKS!
Here's what he wrote:
I got together a small list of requests that some of the soldiers would like:
Almost everyone would like to read Captain America.
WE3 (some twisted comic by Grant Morrison)
All Star Superman (if there are more than the two you already sent)
Anything with Spider-man.
Any Graphic Novel by Image Comics
I'm going to put a couple of boxes of stuff together for him and need suggestions... what would you send? I'll get the WE3, but what would you send that's truly great, self-contained stuff? Le me know!
Labels: action heroes

Here are few of my suggestions, hope they help.
1. Planetary Vol. 1-4
2. Richard Stark's Parker Vol. 1: The Hunter and Vol. 2: The Outfit
3. The Tick: The Complete Edlund
4. DC: The New Frontier Vol. 1 and Vol. 2
5. Midnight Nation
6. The Stuff of Legend, Book 1: The Dark and Book 2: The Jungle
- A.J.
PLANETARY and NEW FRONTIER are great and self-contained... perfect. How about specific CAPTAIN AMERICA and Spidey story arcs?
spidey- The gaunlet arc
Crossed
DMZ- as a former soldier i cant recommend this more it speaks volumes on our nations foreign policy no matter which side you might be on.
and I cant help but suggest anything by Robert Kirkman
Hmmm... DMZ is awesome, and yeah INVINCIBLE and WALKING DEAD are great!
Darkhorse - Conan
Oooh, good choice!
As far as Image Comics go:
Existence 2.0/3.0 or anything by Nick Spencer
Chew by John Layman
Other suggestions:
The Other Side by Jason Aaron, good military book
The Killer by Matz
Bill I have The Walking Dead: Compendium One that I would be glad to donate so that it can be sent along to your nephew and his platoon if you think they would be interested...actually, I have that and the TPB Volume 9 so they would have the first 54 issues of The Walking Dead. Let me know and I can drop it off Wednesday with Joe when I stop by.
Wow, Ed that would be awesome... are you sure you want to give those up?
Yes very sure. I have all 85 issues or whatever is current so essentially, I don't need the Compendium and the TPB.
Well, that would be greatly appreciated. You are quite an awesome fellow! I think I'll poke around in my own library and see what I can come up with! Thanks, Ed!
Absolutely. Glad to do anything I can for the brave men and women of our armed forces. I'll leave them with Joe tomorrow afternoon/evening.
Thanks a bunch, that is greatly appreciated.
I'd like to donate my New Frontier collections to the guys, and if you think they'd like Hellboy I have a bunch of those volumes I could bring in and donate to the cause too!
Sleeper, Criminal, Incognito, aw heck just send them everything Brubaker has written to this point. Oh and maybe a little Ennis Punisher to boot.
Bill: long time listener, first time....commenter? Anyway, following up on Ed R.'s posts, are you willing to take other donations? I have a bunch of 100 page giants from DC from back in the day that are "reading copies" so to speak that are just being neglected in my house.
Oh, and as for Spidey arcs, it's not really an "arc" per se, but the 1st Spiderman Noir blew me away. Any of the Batman Elseworlds titles, especially the Man-Bat mini, are good reads too.
Corey A. in PA
Hey Corey A.! That would be perfect! 100 Page Giants are awesome! Bring 'em in and I'll send 'em out!
I will definitely second most of those. Excellent choices, gents.
Also I'd like to recommend the first two Amanda Conner Power Girl trades. That stuff was awesome.
Also, the Young Avengers collection. Because, again, it is awesome.
Ooh, and MI-13, that sort of "Excaliburish" story by Paul Cornell with Pete Wisdom and Captain Britain from a few years ago.
Good stories, grand art, relatively self-contained. Plus they're some of my favorite comics, too, and should make for pretty good reads, I think.
Hey folks, your friendly neighborhood SFC Timmy Smith here...
I polled the students in my Army class out here, and pretty much the universal response was "Anything that doesn't suck, and that tells a whole story."
I might also suggest some Manga stuff, or things that will appeal to the female troops as well.
The military truly represents the nation as a whole, and just about anything you care to send will be appreciated by someone over there.
Also, snacks are good, especially non-chocolate and non-melty things.
Thanks for think of all my brothers and sisters overseas! God bless you all!!
Manga... great suggestion. And yeah, we're thinking just about anything GOOD, and complete in one book or so...
