Bill, why have you guys been running out of the #1's for the big titles from the new DC? It's frustrating when you don't want to put it on your pull list, but then we can't even look at the book to see if we want to buy it. In fact, you never have any at all to put on the shelf.

Because they are selling like hotcakes! Do what I do, borrow from a friend, and then wait for the hardcover.

There has been an unprecedented surge of interest in the week or so leading up to the release of most of these, with many titles suddenly seeing a 5- to 10-fold increase in interest, unfortunately after my orders are set... and then when I go to "advance reorder" titles, they are already out of stock even before they've shipped. As we go forward, I have much better information on which titles are selling and there will be fewer sell-outs. Sorry about that, but this is an unprecedented situation... I would not have imagined that we would go from selling 28 WONDER WOMAN comics to suddenly selling over 100 copies!

That being said, we have always presented NEW comics as READING MATERIAL, not "investables" so there are always second and third (and fourth and fifth) printings being made available by DC within a couple of weeks.

And yes, it does help to sign up for these titles for your pull/hold box or ask to have comics held for you, as none of our comics are returnable should they NOT sell, unlike chain bookstores which can return any comics that remain unsold...

Anyway, as I've said I am getting a better handle on how to order these, and DC IS keeping them in print for readers. I apologize for under-ordering the initial surge of titles, but a third printing does read just like a first printing.

I agree that the DC #1's selling-out is something that no one expected. I would be willing to bet that the people who reserved some of the titles are speculating that they would be worth something. I would also be willing to bet that you will see a HUGE down-turn in sales after this month for those same titles (let's face it crap before the relaunch is still crap). With that said when I walk into the store minutes after the books have been placed on the self, I would expect at least a few of these titles there to actually look at....there were none of certain titles this past week. (I preface what I'm going to say next with the comment that will continue to buy comics at your store no matter what....) Seems to me that you are catering to the people that call in to reserve copies and not those of us who are in your stores every week dropping at least $25 to $30. We read comics....not just speculate on the possible value. Since comics is a visual media, I need to look at the book BEFORE I purchase it.

Well, except for the fact that historically we have never catered to speculators and that from the get-go we have limited quantities purchased on the New DCU52 comics to one per person... and the people buying these are overwhelmingly not "speculator types" but people just like you who are reading the comics and the majority are box-holders too. With DC's policy of doing 2nd and 3rd and 4th printings, all of these will be available soon for readers. At most you have a couple of weeks to wait to see them. If there are specific books you want to check out, ask the manager to see a copy and one will be presented, and then you can decide if you want your own copy reserved when they are restocked. Maybe that will help.

At any rate, I apologize once again for misjudging demand for this launch and I am sorry that you are unhappy with the result. Due to the 2-3 week time lag between when the order numbers are set and the arrival of the comics we have seen just an incredible increase in subscription requests by box-holders... but I'm pretty sure NEXT WEEK'S New DCU52 quantities are high enough to satisfy demand...

No need to apologize. You're running a business and I am happy for you that you have a sell-out. Prosperity only means I can continue to go to my local comic store for the comics I like. For the stores sake I do hope that those that have opened boxes just to pick up these books continue to buy titles from you and not just drop off when this month is over. It's just very disappointing to not be able to look at book before I reserve it. I don't ask to put a book on my pull-list, flip through the pages, not like it, and hand it back to the person behind the counter. I respect the fact that it's a privledge to have a subscribtion service. Anyway, I'll be back.

As a customer who called in the day before to get me a Batman and a Wonder Woman, I take offense to your notion, Anonymous, that you think these comics were gobbled up by people looking to buy them just for some assumed value they might have or something. I called in because I wanted to read them, dude! I saw the previews of these books on websites like Newsarama and DC's own website, and I thought "huh, I think I need a Batman and a Wonder Woman." So I called the day before and asked for one. The books are hot! I am sorry you missed it but it sounds like these guys are trying to help you get the book if you'd let them.

Yeah I with BG, if you want the books just call in to reserve them! That's what I do! You don't need to show up at the store every week and cross your fingers. Look at them online not in person. Sorry those others missed out, but I got me a first printing I'll be reading while you wait for the second. CHUMPS!!!!

Honestly I see both sides which is why we are desperately trying to fix the situation.

And I just want to add that the people signing up are not in it for the speculative side of it, which we discourage... they are as a rule very interested in the relaunch, which is exactly what DC was trying to accomplish.

(Man I wish you guys would just set up a free blogger account already so I knew which Anonymous was which!)

Dear Anonymous,

If you are who I think you are I told your brother who you share a box with that I would try and get a copy of Batman #1.
This comic came up from our York store on Thursday morning and has been sitting in your box ever since then. I would have called you and told you but we don't have current contact info on your box.
