The New DCU - Not Just New But On Time Too!

As part of their efforts to launch 52 comics in September, DC Comics has asked their creators for a new level of excellence and professionalism to ensure fans that these books will not only look good but also arrive on time! To help inspire reader confidence in this renewed commitment to scheduling, upcoming Hawk & Dove artist, Rob Liefeld, has been documenting his own determination to meet those deadlines. Do not try this while on the road folks!

As a side note, Jared and I will be filling in on blogging duties for Bill while he and his family vacation at his folks' place in sunny Florida. We are so dedicated to deliver a new post each and every day that we may resort to blogging while driving if that's what it takes to ensure a minty fresh daily blog post! Stay tuned!

More DC: The New 52!

This just in from Manager Joe:

DC is doing everything they can to make every single one of these books from Action Comics to I, Vampire important and worthwhile to their publishing line, and they are backing this initiative with an unprecedented marketing campaign! But ultimately it will be retailer enthusiasm that can make or break this launch. We need to learn about these titles and DC will be continuing to provide us information throughout the summer as we build to September. We can expect a 40 page Preview Book to debut both on a retail level and at the San Diego Comic-Con. There will be a "52" Checklist/Scorecard for customers to pick up and keep track of the titles they are after!

"This is DC Comics giving readers the prime version of their characters", said Jim Lee. We will see how many of the classic stories that went before matter but in bold new ways, as going forth the DC Universe will be invigorated to give readers a sense of excitement, adventure, and heroics again.

This initiative is about the people who actually create and publish our favorite comic book characters taking the creative reigns of this universe and using the medium of comics to tell stories like no other art form can do! The folks at DC are tired of seeing video games and movies have all the fun playing with their stable of characters and taking them apart, taking them in new directions, new looks, new history, while the creators at DC Comics adhere to the attitude that these characters are "precious" and have to be played with as such! Now it's a new day at DC! No fear! They have assembled the creators and the resources to make their comics brave and bold again! To tell stories that can reach people and appeal to people equal and better than these other forms of media currently do! Jim Lee explained that they're not just rethinking costumes, they are rethinking about a story is told on a page! How panels can best be used to convey the action in these books! They're tired of giving readers lots of panels of talking heads! The goal of comic books is to bring us the action of these tales!

They showed us a video (which we will be receiving code for to share with customers via our website and Facebook) to share some of this pitch with our customers! I gotta say there's so much excitement between all of these guys for these books and what they are hoping to give readers in September!

Jim Lee said that Flashpoint #5 is very key to how this brave new world is born! Justice League #1 and Action Comics #1 will be bigger extra length books for $3.99 each that will serve to tell a bit of the back story required in reading and understanding the changes to the Universe.

AWESOMESAUCE!

ADDITIONALLY:

Some other neat info I just recalled about the Justice League book:

The first story arch establishes how these people came together to do what they do. In this world Superman is the first superhero again, but Batman has been operating for a fair amount of time too but almost everyone thinks he's an urban legend. The initial members come together as a team to say to the world "we are here to serve the world" as people don't really have a sense of what a superhero even is yet, but they're aware that extraordinary men and women are operating in the world they live in now. So these heroes unite. Batman does it reluctantly. Green Lantern is in but doesn't know if he needs to be on a team. When he needs some help at one point he calls his buddy Barry Allen but The Flash isn't sure he should join such a team. When Hal tells him "you could meet Batman...", Barry responds "Wait a minute! He's a real guy?" To which Hal responds, "yeah, and he's kind of a jerk!".

Johns' stressed the book has three essential elements he's hoping to push and that's heroics, humour, and heart. I think coupled with Jim Lee's art this is going to be the "IT" book of the year!

Man, this all sounds amazing... what do you all think?

DC: The New 52

This just in from Manager Jared:

The New 52:

-Accessibility to a wider audience. "This will feel like it did when the characters were first introduced and hadn't yet fought their enemies and defeated them so many times already." Jim Lee said

-Some costumes similar to TV or movie properties. Ex. Green Arrow.

-Costumes will be the same comic to comic. Everyone will look uniform in any book they appear in and the artists have graphs of these looks so they can keep them the same.

-Also the timeline of the events going on in the universe is being tightly monitored, so that they all line up accordingly, but they're not all linear.

-"Heroes acting like heroes" Dan Didio

-Characters changing back to "Prime Age" "Young fresh and vibrant" Didio said.

-They were really focusing on the amount of time and quality of this first launch of 52 books. Art direction was overseen by Jim Lee who would recommend new dynamic ways to layout panels and such.

-They will be keeping with the effects of Brightest Day and the Green Lantern sagas. Also the Batman material will still be valid leading up to this new "initiative". OTHER BOOKS however will have bigger changes. "Reinvention" Didio said.

-Similar to what they did in when they launched the silver age books and again post-crisis, except this time it's all the books in one month.

-13 books a week will ship with new number ones and the books will ship so that 1 Batman title and week, 1 GL, and 1 Superman book will come out at a time. So, no more weeks with 3 Batman books, that way we get a Batman book almost every week with a great story.

-Example of a change in how things look and act is the Flash's costume and how it goes onto his body almost in pieces. You'll have to see it, but it's different than before so those little things will be neat!

-"Secret Identities will matter, flashbacks, and supporting cast' Didio said. the fun things that we loved about the characters from the beginning will become prevalent again.

-Dark Knight is a Batman book that will show a wider breadth of DCU characters, rather than just Gotham based characters.

-Barbara Gordon is rehabilitated and we'll find out how. Killing Joke and the Oracle stuff still matters and happened. They're not erasing.

-Suicide Squad features a drastically different Harley Quinn as the "anchor of the team". as Jim Lee stated.

-For the Justice League book Johns said, "the word superhero isn't even in their vocabulary" They're all essentially coming together for the first time and meeting each other. This is one of two books that act as a retelling of an origin.

-Justice League is sounding awesome based off a few scenes they described. It'll have a lot of humor and sounds really great for everyone!!!

THIS ALL SOUNDS AWESOME! WHAT A COOL TIME TO BE READING COMICS! I'M IN!

100 BULLETS heads to Showtime!

Yay! One of the coolest comic books ever has been picked up as a series at Showtime:

Comic book/graphic novel adaptation master David S. Goyer is taking on 100 Bullets as a potential TV series. Goyer is attached to write and executive produce a drama series project for Showtime based on the Eisner and Harvey Award-winning comic book that published 100 issues between 1999 and 2009, all written by Brian Azzarello and illustrated by Eduardo Risso.

What do you recommend?

This guy needs comic books.

Hey, my nephew, SPC Andrew Artz is currently with 2nd Platoon, 511th Sapper Company, 326th Engineer Battalion, out of Fort Cambell, KY and is currently deployed to Baghad in support of Operation New Dawn, under the 1st Infantry, and 25th Infantry Division, and him and the guys in his platoon NEED COMIC BOOKS!

Here's what he wrote:
I got together a small list of requests that some of the soldiers would like:

Almost everyone would like to read Captain America.
WE3 (some twisted comic by Grant Morrison)
All Star Superman (if there are more than the two you already sent)
Anything with Spider-man.
Any Graphic Novel by Image Comics

I'm going to put a couple of boxes of stuff together for him and need suggestions... what would you send? I'll get the WE3, but what would you send that's truly great, self-contained stuff? Le me know!

Now with TWICE the X-Men!

Marvel will soon have TWO X-Men titles:

It’s the old two-for-one gambit as Marvel announced today that it will be replacing the long-running Uncanny X-Men title with two books as the X-Men split into two contentious groups as a result of the Jason Aaron-penned X-Men Schism series, which debuts in July. Aaron and Chris Bachalo’s new Wolverine and the X-Men #1 will debut in October focusing on a group led by Logan with a lineup that, according to Marvel, “no one will see coming.”

The Uncanny X-Men, which will end its 48-year run with issue #544 (see “Uncanny X-Men Ending”), will return in November with The Uncanny X-Men #1 by Kieron Gillen and artists Carlos Pacheco and Greg Land. Gillen, who is writing the final issues of the old Uncanny X-Men, sees the two new X-Men series as the natural result of the events in Schism as the tensions between Wolverine and Cyclops lead to a Civil War-like split between the various members of the group.

From the Wahl Collection: An Earth Man On Venus

So I was just puttering around in my basement, digging through one of the boxes of stuff I've accumulated (I can't really call it a collection, as that implies intent) and I ran across one of my favorite comic books ever, AN EARTH MAN ON VENUS, AVON, 1951:

Quite the spectacular cover, eh? It's the quintessential garishly-colored, pulp-type science fiction comic book cover - a babe, a monster and a stern-jawed rescuer.. it's got it all!

Remembering that I also had a vintage 1950 copy of the Avon paperback , I dug that out to compare the two:

Pretty awesome, too! Hero in underwear stabbing giant ant, bravely protecting (winged and antennae-ed) heroine.

And then I noticed something. Check out what 1950 paperback cover gal is wearing:

Now look at what comic book cover hero is wearing:

WHAT IS GOING ON? THAT DUDE STOLE THAT GIRL'S OUTFIT!

Same blue dress, with the same gold trim! Crazy.

Neil Gaiman's AMERICAN GODS to be HBO series!

I just caught this over at The Hollywood Reporter:

The series-in-development, revolving around the question “are you a god if no one believes in you?” is executive produced by Goetzman and Hanks, with Bob Richardson, and Gaiman on board as executive producer and writer.

Now slated for six seasons, each season will be of 10-12, hour-long episodes with a budget of around $35-40 million per season, targeted to debut on the cable powerhouse in 2013 at the earliest.

Rich in religious folklore that spanned millennia and featuring deities from Greek and Nordic mythology, and even the Judeo-Christian monotheistic God making an appearance, in the contemporary U.S., American Gods will be effects-heavy to do justice to the awe-inspiring power of the divine beings. “There are some crazy things in there. We’ll probably be doing more effects in there than it’s been done on a television series,” said Goetzman.

CLICK HERE to read the entire article!

Neil Gaiman, the comic book writer of 1989's amazing groundbreaking SANDMAN (and much much more) is a highly successful novelist, and this is one of his very best books. It should be pretty darn cool, especially if they can bring state-of-the-art special effects to do this novel justice!

In the News(paper)

Well, the Pittsburgh-area casting call for the upcoming BATMAN movie has made the York Dispatch, and Manager Jared has the score:

"There's a lot of Batman fans in York," he said. "Batman fans are probably one of the biggest groups of fans in York ... Some have Batman tattoos."

He said some comic fans prefer Superman, who's "sort of a Boy Scout good guy, always-do-right," while others like the darker character in Batman, who's "brooding, vengeful ... because his parents were killed by criminals."

Batman fans would have the chance to be involved in a highly anticipated movie, the third and final installment of Chris Nolan's trilogy, he said.

DC's upcoming 52 titles

Well, the Internet has certainly been lively lately hasn't it? Rumors abound and the rending of garments and the gnashing of teeth can be heard from here to Krypton it seems. What is happening? What does it all mean? Why are they messing with (insert favorite character) again? Why can't they leave Brittney ALOONNNNNE? And why is Rob Liefeld doing a HAWK & DOVE title? UGLYDOLLs hit the big screen!

"The Uglydolls were created back in 2001 by "two love struck artists" David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim (uglydolls.com). What started as a drawing of a playful orange character known as Wage, quickly expanded into the physical dolls and even an "Uglyverse," a universe where UGLY meant unique and special. These little dolls, even life-size ones, have permeated Comic-Con hallways up and down since their creation, as they've become a staple character in the nerdy anime/comics/artistic world."
I'm sure you've noticed these things poking around Comix Connection for the past five years or so... the adorable UGLYDOLLs! They're awesome, they all have names and a bit of backstory (I like WAGE, some like ICEBAT), and they're so ugly they're cute. Well, brace yourselves, folks! They're headed to the Big Screen!

"Deadline reports that Meledandri and Illumination have acquired rights to adapt the Uglydoll franchise into an animated feature film. Think of those little yellow minions from Despicable Me, but as Uglydolls instead, hundreds of them running around - yea, that's why this was such an easy sell for them."
