I'm sure most of you already know this, but the current highest-rated cable TV series from AMC, WALKING DEAD is based on a COMIC BOOK from Image Comics! I know, right? And the coolest thing about the comic book is that it's VERY DIFFERENT from the TV show, but at the same time it's JUST AS GOOD! Both have the same extremely tense plotting and fantastic characters. Anyway, if you're coming into the hobby from the television side, this will serve as a brief guideline/introduction to what's available on the comic book side!
First off, WALKING DEAD is a monthly comic book series... we currently have just a few of the most recent issues in stock, but there's a new issue every month. (No, we don't have copies of issue number one lying around, those are long gone!)
The GOOD THING is that Image Comics keeps this comic available in print in a multitude of formats, all of which are available at Comix Connection. Behold:
There is the WALKING DEAD COMPENDIUM, which collects issues #1-48 (the first eight reprint volumes) in a huge handy volume for $59.99. (We're assuming there will be a second WALKING DEAD COMPENDIUM soon after the monthly comic hits issue number 96 or so.)
There are currently FIFTEEN SOFTCOVER VOLUMES of WALKING DEAD, each reprinting six consecutive issues of the monthly comic book. Volume One (reprinting issues #1-6) is a mere $9.99 (to give you an inexpensive taste of the WD goodness.) Volumes 2-15 are a reasonable $14.99 each! One of the neat things about these volumes is that the cover images connect to form one huge zombie-filled image!
The next way you can find WALKING DEAD in is in the Oversized Hardcover format. There are currently seven of these bad boys available, and each reprints twelve issues of the monthly comic book, or two of the above-mentioned softcover volumes. These are large-format hardcover books with a nice binding that really look great on your shelf and can withstand multiple re-readings, which we're sure you will do with this series. These special volumes for the serious collector clock in at $34.99 a book!
A third way to enjoy WALKING DEAD is via the OMNIBUS format. These deluxe hardcover feature 24 issues of the hit series along with the covers for the issues all in massive, oversized slip-cased volumes. For the die-hard fan, these cost $100.00 each, and there are three volumes so far, taking you up to issue #72, with a fourth volume to be published soon.
