A Cody-Kenobi Review: BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT #0

For my second review this week, I chose Batman: The Dark Knight #0 to review. I'll come right on out and say it, it was so bland. More bland than the chicken I had last night for supper, and trust me that was BLAND! There really wasn't anything new in this issue in my opinion. He is obsessed with finding his parents killer, and he does. Finds Joe Chill, and doesn't do anything then tries to get answers and leaves. That's it, that's the whole comic. Nothings really added to it, unless you really want to see Bruce's watch taken from him. That's all I really have to say about the story, though, the art work is very well done. Mico Suayan and Juan Jose Ryp really do bring a life like edge to this book. The significance of the pearls is strong also, and its repeated in a couple different frames. But other than that, I think it could have been more exciting.

My Rating: 1.7 outa' 5

Greatest Comic Book Movie EVER? - Counter Monkey Steve speaks

This trailer points out some of the problems hardcore fans have with Marvel's The Avengers movie:

Despite the nitpicking, Marvel's The Avengers is, in my humble opinion, still the quintessential comic book movie and should be celebrated as such. If you haven't seen it, do so now, else you must turn in your geek license at the door! It's that good!

You've already seen it? Watch it again!

The Black Widow is calling in backup to drag you away and punish you for your crimes now...by making you watch Catwoman. Should've just watched The Avengers while you had the chance.

Seriously. Marvel's The Avengers = Best Comic Book Movie Ever!

A Cody-Kenobi Review: DARTH MAUL: DEATH SENTENCE #3

Oh Darthy Mauly (I don't believe he would like being called that) what an excellent story you weave. My review this week is on Darth Maul: Death Sentence #3, and oh is it great! There are two things I really admire about this book: 1) The art is pretty familiar in the comic book universe, I guess you could say a regular comic book style. Anyway, I admire how Mr. Redondo decided to do it like that. Even though we left Maul at the end of the last season of The Clone Wars, they decided not to do the artistic style of The Clone Wars - animated cartoon style? (Haha I have no idea) and 2) When you read this, just look at Darth Maul, just look at his face - it's PERFECT! You can just see the twisting snarling hatred that is Maul, and you see it unfold on the page, it's great! There is adequate action, backed by a great story. The variables in this story line are perfect. If you're a Star Wars fan, you won't be disappointed! Even if you're not, its a great read! Is he really going to _________?! He's turned the natives on the _______ at the end, so he can _____ his ______!

OH! Have no idea what I'm talking about?

Noir- An Under-Appreciated Genre Column 2

The noir genre doesn't have to focus solely on the dark and dingy streets of New York City or Boston. It can also find itself drawn to the prairies of South Dakota. It is here that one of the most unique noir series of the past decade takes place..

Jason Aaron has split the X-Men in two, sent Wolverine to hell and caused him to kill his own children, and established a new academy for the education of mutants, but that's nothing compared to the hell he's put characters through in the pages of his creator-owned vertigo series SCALPED.

The story begins with the prodigal child Dashiell Bad Horse returning the the Indian Reservation that had been a large part of his childhood. None of the residents, including his own mother Gina, have seen or heard from him in years. The entire reservation wonders why he has dragged himself back, and most suspect that he couldn't make it on his own out in the world. A figure from his family's past and the current President of the Tribal Council and Sheriff of the Tribal Police, "Chief" Red Crow, makes it known that the "Rez" is under his control, and he expresses that he will not tolerate any misbehavior from anyone. Red Crow controls all of the illegal activity within the reservation and ensures that those who do not follow the rules he has laid down conveniently meet an untimely demise.  Red Crow ends up recruiting Bad Horse as one of his deputies but warns him to stay away from his daughter Carol.

Carol is the reservation's resident woman of ill repute and Dash's former childhood love interest. Dash stands no chance of reclaiming his place in her heart as long as her current "boyfriend" Diesel is around to keep her addicted to meth. Diesel is one of the reservation's more well known criminals and disposes of anyone who questions his Native American bloodline. He and Carol both play large roles in the series going forward.

Once readers finish the first issue and discover the truth behind Dashiell Bad Horse's return to the "Rez", they'll be hooked.

Aaron has done his research with this series and consulted with several tribal councils to ensure that the reality of life on a reservation was properly portrayed. R. M. Guera tackles the artwork duties on nearly every issue of the series and brings Aaron's vision to life. It's hard to imagine the series without this art putting the gritty underworld-like environment on display for all readers to see.

Scalped recently ended with # 60, having told the entire story Jason Aaron set out to tell. The series is available as ten collected edition trade paperbacks, and is well worth the investment. This series is one the best that DC has released through their Vertigo imprint and is truly unique.

Next week, I'll tackle yet another noir series, and hopefully, you'll find yourselves eager to try one out. If so, I've done my job. Thanks for reading, and make sure to watch the shadows at night. You never know what could be lurking in them.

Shagadelic Sunday!

Pictured above is a poster that advertises what could have been the first issue's cover by J. Scott Campbell of an ongoing Austin Powers comic series by DC Comics' Wildstorm imprint. Considering how long the fourth Austin Powers film has been in development hell, it would have been interesting to see how a comic series would have performed. The possibilities are endless with comics as a medium, and I think an Austin Powers comic would have been groovy, baby!

What do the rest of you think?

A Counter Monkey Steve Review - WONDER WOMAN #0

Holy Hera- A Review of WONDER WOMAN # 0
by Counter Monkey Steve

This month's issue of Wonder Woman continues the trend of showing that Diana needs no man to help her along her journey through life. Issue #0 shares a story from her childhood with us. Each year, Diana brings her mother a gift that can only be acquired through a feat of strength or strategy in order to be deserving of a celebration. This birthday progresses in a different manner than those of previous years, and Diana finds herself on an adventure that allows her to display not only the strength of her body, but also the strength of her heart.

Brian Azzarello has made Wonder Woman a must read title since he relaunched it with the beginning of the New 52, and his usual partner in crime on art duties, Cliff Chiang, does something magical with Azzarello's script each issue. The book has not been this well done since Greg Rucka's run that had been published prior to DC's Infinite Crisis event.

If readers are looking for a title with a strong female character and a great story each month, Wonder Woman does not disappoint and comes highly recommended.

A Cody-Kenobi Review: STAR WARS DARTH VADER GHOST PRISON #5 (OF 5)

If you saw my reviews last week, you should know I was less than happy with the Star Wars comics I've read. The final issue to Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison is an A+ success in my book!  Now this is the Star Wars story that I will read over and over again. The art work is brilliant! It's exactly how I want my comics to be! Excellent amount of action, the story wraps up exceedingly well! I wish all comics were as great as this one. One of the best Star Wars comic series since "Boba Fett is Dead". I hope that Blackman and Alessio work together again, and keep their amazing style.Oh the ending is really a surprise, I guess that's what happens when you don't put enough sugar in Vader's coffee.

A Counter Monkey Steve Review - CRIMINAL

Noir- An Under-Appreciated Genre

The comic book world caters to many different genre: super hero, horror, comedy, science fiction, and more. One genre that I feel is under-appreciated is noir.

Webster's Dictionary defines noir as "crime fiction featuring hard-boiled cynical characters and bleak, sleazy settings." each Monday, I'd like to explore a different comic series that fits within noir.

The comic series within the noir genre I'm about to describe to you meet the qualifications of that definition, and hopefully, you'll have a better appreciation of the genre and will even be willing to try out something new by the end of this.

Ed Brubaker is well known within the super hero genre for revitalizing CAPTAIN AMERICA with his Winter Soldier story and has continued to write the title since that first story. What many readers do not know is that Mr. Brubaker has also written several comics in the noir genre that are just as spectacular, if not more so, than his Captain America stories.

CRIMINAL is similar to Frank Millar's SIN CITY in that characters from different stories will interact with one another, or at least appear in their stories, visit the same locations, or find themselves in similar situations. Each story arc within CRIMINAL presents the reader with characters that are truly terrible people but are able to find sympathy with the reader as their motivations are explored. Those motivations don't justify their positions, but they definitely make the reader rethink that's right and wrong, making for a good story.

Ed Brubaker is joined in the creation of each chronicle by Sean Phillips, whose artwork perfectly portrays each and every beat of the Ed's drum. The dark underbelly of the criminal underworld becomes real for the reader thanks to Phillips talent. However, he can also give the reader a light-hearted and cheery Archie-style setting if the plot calls for it, as he does in last year's CRIMINAL: LAST OF THE INNOCENTS. Ed and Sean have worked together before, but that's a story for a different column. We'll tackle their work, SLEEPER, soon enough.

So far, there have been six trade paperback collected editions of CRIMINAL made available to us and two larger "Deluxe" hardcover collections, each collecting three of the trade paperback collections. CRIMINAL is a series truly worth the money spent on it and really draws the reader into the world of noir, hence why I felt that starting with CRIMINAL: COWARD was the best way to go.

If this column has brought you any interest in trying out an atypical genre, then I have accomplished my mission. Please feel free to leave your comments below, and also feel free to try out CRIMINAL. You won't be sorry.

Until next column: watch your back. You never know what waits for you in the shadows.

Lightning Strikes Twice - An early head's-up of THUNDERBOLTS #1 by Counter Monkey Steve

Lightning Strikes Twice!

The Thunderbolts title returns with a new # 1 this December! The Red Hulk selects a group of characters from across the Marvel Universe to come together and get the missions no one else will attempt completed. Venom, The Punisher, Deadpool, and Elektra are no strangers to doing what must be done, and will take their marching orders from Red Hulk seriously. Unlike the Secret Avengers and their covert operations, the Thunderbolts are going to land like an atomic bomb. The Thunderbolts have a new direction, and Marvel wants to make sure they can share the spotlight with the Avengers and the Fantastic Four.

Thunderbolts # 1 will release this December. Written by Daniel Way with art by Steve Dillon, this new series is perfect for anyone looking for a "smashing" good read.

Two more Cody Kenobi Reviews for this week!

I'm reviewing PUNK ROCK JESUS #4, and I'm serious when I say give this series a chance! This isn't any of your mainstream superhero stories, and this series has been the best I've read this year. The artwork is just brilliant, and the fact that its black and white adds to the brilliancy. The story is just great, now that its in the middle of the series, it really has a chance to bloom. Chris grows up fast in this issue, one page hes an infant, the next page hes a preteen. That's OK with me, because it aids in so well with the overall story. There's some actual laughable humor, that really takes the edge off such a serious story and that's a good thing! Also, if you really want a bad guy you can truly hate, pick it up just for that reason. Slate is equal to a lot of choice words that I can't put into this review. If you can get past the "religious" view of it, pick it up. I, Cody-Kenobi, guarantee you wont be disappointed, or your money back! (not really)

My Rating: 5 outa' 5

Great Job Sean Murphy!

A very interesting story, I've just read STAR WARS LOST TRIBE OF THE SITH #2, very interesting in a good and bad way. The first issue was a little slow, which I come to expect from a first issue. They set up the story and what not. This issue sorta puts it into second gear, but seems to slip back to first. Once again it establishes new characters, and a new setting and such. Not much in the way of "action", mostly story in this one. Don't get me wrong, the story is good, and the little action there is, is good. I also don't care for the artwork, it just seems a little too cartoony. I like my artwork like the "Boba Fett is Dead" sytle. Overall, it just seems to be lacking something, like chicken noodle soup without the noodles. I just hope that the story, action and everything picks up. But its pretty decent so far, this Star Wars fan is just picky.

My Rating: 3.8 outa' 5

Cody Kenobi Review - Star Wars Knight Errant Escape #4

It's been a long week, but today I'm reviewing Star Wars Knight Errant: Escape #4. In all honesty I wanted to love this series, I really did. I mean I love Star Wars, I thought it would be just as natural, but in my opinion, this story wasn't very interesting till now. I felt it really needed a pick me up, and it has it to a point. There seems to be some little corny haha humor, little to no action, and some dialogue seemed a bit unnatural. I feel that this series is clearly story driven, and that's all you can expect. Get ready to connect the dots on your own. Also, whats with this cover? Clone Troops back in the Old Republic Era (There's also a clone drop ship)? This book seems to lack some originality in that context. Though like I did say, the story, though that's all it seems to be, is getting interesting. Interesting to buy the final issue, well I came this far didn't I?

My Rating: 3.5 outa' 5

"CAPTAIN AMERICA IS A JERK!"- A Review of Ultimate Comics Spider-Man # 14 By Counter Monkey Steve

Now that I have your attention, let me explain.

In his interactions with Spider-Man in the Ultimate Marvel Universe, Captain America has been less than kind. Peter Parker was a great hero before the Ultimate version of the Avengers, The Ultimates, formed and before Captain America was defrosted after 60 years frozen in a block of ice. He had proven himself to be worthy of the respect of his peers, sacrificing the things that would make him happy and dedicating himself to others. This wasn't seen as enough by certain government operatives. I'm looking at you, Nick Fury.

After collateral damage built up in each of Peter's battles against the latest baddies that would appear to make his life a living pain in the tuckus, Nick Fury believed that a training program was necessary for teenage titan of spider-specific strength. Iron Man was the first hero to begin training Peter, and Tony Stark found Peter to be an equal in intelligence but his superior in sheer heroism. When Steve Rogers took his turn to mentor Peter, he found him lacking and suggested that he turn in his mask. Little did Cap know, however, that Spider-Man would soon prevent Frank Castle, the Punisher, from putting a bullet through his kneecap. In order to save Captain America, Spider-Man jumped in front of the bullet and found himself with a serious stomach leak. This injury eventually caused Peter to bleed out after his final battle with Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin, and pass into the next life. At the funeral, Steve Rogers took responsibility for Peter's demise and was rebuffed with a loud slap across the face by Aunt May, the woman who raised Peter Parker as her own son. Cap went into a self-imposed exile shortly after.

When the nation needed him most, Steve Rogers returned and found that Miles Morales had taken up the mantle left by Peter Parker and had become the new Spider-Man. # 13 of Ultimate Comics Spider-Man ends with Miles meeting Aunt May and Gwen Stacy, with Cap following him and declaring that he will give up his life as Spider-Man!

Issue# 14 begins with Gwen shouting the line, "CAPTAIN AMERICA IS A JERK!", a tribute to Kitty Pryde's utterance of a similar phrase to Charles Xavier in the regular Marvel Universe. Nick Fury has already given Miles his blessing, and Captain America was acting on his own feelings about someone else running around as Spider-Man. He insists that Miles cease and desist or face jail time. He then rushes off to deal with an escaped convict.

Aunt May and Gwen, and a just having arrived Mary Jane Watson give Miles their blessing and an essential Spider-Man tool, urging him to keep up the fight and prove himself to Captain America. Needless to say, Miles does by issue's end. My "spoilers" end there.

What can I say about this series that hasn't already been said? Brian Michael Bendis has been writing Ultimate Spider-Man since its creation, and neither he nor I see any end in sight. He writes this book with a fantastic talent for making each character real. The dialogue rings true for each character in the book, and you feel like you're Uatu the Watcher while reading this series. Just not in a creepy way. The latest artist to attach himself to the book is David Marquez. It's not an easy task to follow up Sara Pichelli on a book like Ultimate Comics Spider-Man. Sara has left temporarily to work on Spider-Men, the crossover book for Ultimate Comics Spider-Man and the Amazing Spider-Man. Terrific stuff. Buy now! David's facial expressions are great, and they evoke a very real emotion from the readers. You feel as though Captain America is berating you instead of Miles. You feel your heart lift as Aunt May gives Miles the gift of SPOILERS! Everything just works, and it wouldn't mean anything without the help of David's colorist Justin Ponsor. David's been promoted to co-artist on the title and will do rotating arcs with Ms. Pichelli when she returns.

This comic is fantastic, and it's a shame that there aren't more people attached to it. The Ultimate Universe may not matter in the grander scheme of things with the Marvel Universe, but everything that happens does affect that particular universe. When a character dies in the universe, they are apparently dead. No deus ex machina can bring them back. That's just one reason why each story matters in the Ultimate Universe. I strongly urge anyone looking for a fun read each month try the long running wonder that is Ultimate Comics Spider-Man.

Cody-Kenobi Reveiw - ACTION COMICS #0

Let me just start off by saying that the art in Action Comics Issue #0 is how I like my comics to be. It has a real life feel with a cartoon edge, and I love to see that. The content in this comic is quite good! There are two little stories here, but I must say I like the first the best. The story itself in part 1 is good. It fills in a lot of back story which is always nice to see, and throws some new information about Clark (Superman) in there that I never knew previously. Not much to pushing the story forward, but more or less adding to what you already know. Great Art, Great Story, Great Comic! Read it, plus it's an Issue #0, how can you not?!

Cody-Kenobi Review #1:

This is my my review on The First X-men Issue #1, and how ironic that it's my first X-men comic I've read in awhile, and I have to say, I'm happy I did! Neal Adams does brilliant art and the story telling is just great (Thanks to Christos Gage and Matt Wilson)! The very first page (no not the pizza ad) , really draws you in. You can just hear Logan's (Wolverine) gruff voice, the dialog is just something he would say, along with Creed (Sabertooth) too. There is a decent amount of action, nothing too over the top, and the story leads you till the final page as you want to story to go on. If you want something fresh, and have a basic understanding of the X-men (even if you don't), pick it up, its well worth the read!
